Reading about the Guggenheim-Oxycontin protest in the urgentcraft article made me consider the question of what the purpose of published print in this example was. In the past I’ve struggled with this question because obviously when there is something you are protesting against, you would want that your actions to contribute to if not resolve the issue, but spreading published print in this way did not seem to be a satisfying answer to the question for me. After thinking about it and reading more about the protest from the article NY Times wrote, I’ve come up with a more satisfying answer. To spread published print in this way is a combination of alternative news source with guerrilla art-fare. By doing this, the protestors were creating a spectacle, effectively drawing people’s attention (not just those presently visiting the Guggenheim but now by way of news articles that get published about the spectacle), to issues that may have gone under the radar—due to intentional cover-ups paid for by the culprit, or even just the typical flow of mainstream news cycles. This helps me come to term with the question of the purpose of this kind of protest, because there are so many things to distract us, and evil acts from institutions by which we have become the victims of can go hidden, to the point where we are suffering and we don’t even know why.
